Obama's America

LIST COURTESY FREE REPUBLIC

Only in Obama’s new America can:

1. Politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund raising event.

2. People claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when we have a black President, a black Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal workforce is black and only 12% of the population is black.

3. Could we have had the two people most responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Department and Charles Rangel who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

4. We have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that Muslims might be harmed by the backlash.

5. We make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege while we discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just become American citizens.

6. The people who believe in balancing the federal budget and sticking by the country's Constitution be thought of as "extremists."

7. You vote without any Identification, but need an ID to cash a check, buy alcohol or cigarettes, gain access to government buildings etc.

8. Politicians demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company (Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes (Nike).

9. Could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, and still spend over a trillion dollars more than it took in every year since a President has been in office and still have the nerve to complain that the government still doesn’t have enough money.

10. The rich people who pay 86% of all income taxes be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don't pay any income taxes at all.

11. The President whose party constantly champions the separation of church and state, and therefore protests against such things as manger scenes in public, only in that America could that president then sign a law forcing churches to pay for things which are totally against their teachings, such as birth control.

12. A President whose core constituency used the phrase “Keep the government out of my uterus” in the pro-choice debate now sign a law that forces tax payers to pay for the government to implant birth control devices in those same uterus’.

13.We have a government that purposefully kills job creating enterprises such as the Keystone pipeline, then demagogues the issue by calling on those from the other party to "play fair" and extend unemployment benefits beyond 99 weeks.

14. We have politicians claim that extending unemployment benefits, stimulate job creation.

15. The President bemoan the fact that he too is wealthy and that his taxes should be raised and yet he takes every deduction he possibly can on his tax return.

Today in music history: 1984

Today, we look back, all the way back to 1984, and find:

"Let's hear it for the boy" by Deniece Williams

This is a fun little pop song, and totally great for karoke.  The video is a tiny bit cheesy, but it's 1984, what can you expect?

What did you think of this one?

Hello

Linked up!

Today, I have another link for you!

Want to waste time, but not a lot of it?

Well, then, 5 Second Films is for you! (Warning, autoplay video ahead!)

The title is rather self-explanatory, they do VERY short movies every weekday.

They are mostly one-shot jokes that'll keep you laughing every day!

To start, I thought I'd share the video that got me hook, but go and watch their massive backlog, it'll only take a little while!

Warcraft 101: I always come back

So I’ve been trying a new MMO, one that just went free to play.  It is a fun game, and Joe’s brother, his wife, and another friend play this MMO almost exclusively.

The MMO in question is Aion, an obscenely beautiful game.  The character creation screen is incredibly robust, you can make your character look nearly exactly as you want, from skin tone to hair color, height to weight.  There are a ton of fun elements in the game, but I always feel the urge to compare to WoW, and WoW almost always wins, and I’d like to tell you why.

The character creation screen--holy crap options!

Reason #1: Health and mana regen rates.  In WoW, the regen rates when you are not in combat are not terribly fast, but you have an appreciable amount occurring, enough that you don’t have to drink a potion after each pull.  In Aion, however, you need to rest after each kill, and it takes literally forever.  If you can’t regen before a respawn, there is a problem.

Just Cause

You know you sang along, admit it!

Melissa Meets Boy:Season 2

This season started breaking out of the mold a little bit.  Characters grew more into the people they would eventually become, new characters were introduced who would have a major impact on the show, and the set moved to where we would know it for the next four seasons, John Adams High.

The season started with Cory and Shawn coming into their first day of high school(apparently, John Adams was a 7-12 school), and promptly pissing off the school bully, Harley.  They soon are introduced to Mr. Turner, another mainstay for the next couple of seasons, and a big part of campus life for it.

Cory and Shawn go through the normal seventh grade turmoil, from finding friends, to finding girls, to passing class, to finding girls, from avoiding bullies to finding girls.  If you didn’t catch that, a big plot point for a chunk of the season was Shawn’s ability to date, and Cory ability to be jealous of that ability.

In this season we had our first glimpses of Cory and Topanga, though they never actually date during this season.  However, there is some ‘ seven minutes in heaven’ action.

A lot of what this season was was a buildup of arcs for all of the characters, arcs that would last as character growth through much of the show’s run.

There were a couple of standout moments, check after the break for them!

SNL; 5/19/12

This week’s SNL was the season finale, and the last show for several current cast members, including Andy Samberg, Kristin Wiig, and rumored Jason Sudekis.  Mick Jagger hosted, and did a passable job, though he really showed why musicians aren’t the greatest hosts, what with his awkward line readings and blatant staring at the cue cards.

But what of the show, you may ask?  Well, let me tell you with

The Good, the Meh, and the Ugly!

The Good:

Cold Open:Lawrence Welk(7)-I don’t usually like this one, but the inclusion of Jon Hamm at the end really getting into K. Wiig’s character amused me for some reason.  This was the first of many sketches that features K.Wiig tonight.

Excel and you: Color coding’s for the birds!

Last week we discussed embedded if/then statements.  Those can pop out different numbers for a variety of situations.  But what happens if you want to find a specific number easily, or a range of values?

Well, conditional formatting is for you!

To start off, we won’t even use numbers.  Say you have a list imported from another source, say a staff or client list.  Now, you want to verify that each person is only on there once, you could sort by name, and then manually search through the list, but what if you miss one?

Well, that’s where conditional formatting comes in.  Highlight the column you would like to check for, and go to the conditional formatting->highlight cell rules->duplicate values.  And viola!  Each cell that has a match will be highlighted, and super easy to see!

You can even sort the list by color then, and pull all the duplicates to the top for easy removal!

Now, if you wanted to highlight only a specific value, or range of values, say anything under 0, go to conditional formatting->highlight cell rules->less than, and choose your preferred method of highlighting.  It’s that easy!

Conditional formatting can be found in the home tab of the office ribbon!

There are literally tons of uses for conditional formatting, let me know what you use it for in the comments!

Today in music history: 1983

Today, as we look back yet again, we find ourselves in 1983, and hear:

"Let's Dance" by David Bowie

So, considering how weird David Bowie is, this song was pretty normal.  The video was strange, but the song itself?  Pretty decent!  It had a good beat, and was even a bit sing-along-able.

What did you think of this one?

Week 9: Motivation status:low

This week was tough.  I wasn't feeling 100%, and I had access to a car to get to work, so it was easy to say "oh, I have my car today, I can just drive, and finish this one last thing before I head out."  Naughty self, naughty!

Next week, I have a goal of 50 miles, we'll see if I manage that.  I really need to kick it into high gear, the MS150 is only a couple of weeks away.  Speaking of which...

Go here for donations, it's a good time!

Week 9(May 13-19) totals:        16 miles
