The Funny Stuff:NBC Thursday(10/25)

Stupid stupid football game forced me to watch these on Friday night, but the OMG in one of the shows more than made up for it.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, there will be massive spoilers following, especially for Parks and Rec, which I urge you to watch before reading this!

30 Rock

This was kind of a meh episode.  There weren’t a whole lot of laughs, and the plot was really just filler, but the end cap was pretty great.

Jack invites Liz to his Republican luncheon as long as she promises not to be obnoxious with her liberalism.  She fails after the shrimp does, and busts out with this huge long spiel that only gets the Republicans there to donate more money to Jack’s super PAC.

Jack uses the money raised to buy ad time for a terrible commercial, and is angry when it doesn’t work.  He goes to his super Pac committee, and they look through the electoral map to try to figure out who they need to pitch to, which ends up being the stoners in Florida’s pan handle…

Which is precisely the group Tracy has just described to Liz, after she vented her frustration to him.  He, though, explained how he knew people’s voting patterns based on stand up gigs throughout the country.   Luckily for all involved, this leads right to Jenna’s subplot…

She had another hit song, “Catching Crabs,” and has amassed a massive following who call themselves the Crab Catchers.   Of course, as a twist in the end, these are the same group of people that will swing the election either way, so we end on Jack and Liz both racing to Jenna to try and get her to pimp one candidate over the other.  “To be continued…” says Kenneth to a spider as the very end, so we’ll find out next week who Jenna will go for, unless they are just doing some sort of meta commentary, and do something completely different.  I guess we’ll see.

Anyway, the very best part of the episode was the explaining how the country will go, and explaining Florida hilariously.  There were other funny things, though!

Jenna, singing her newest hit: “I caught crabs in paradise, and yes, I mean both kinds of crabs.”
Jack and Liz, after Liz’s outburst at the luncheon: “You are my chum...the bait I throw in the water to attract the big fish.”  “Dammit, second meaning!”

The Funny Stuff: NBC Thursday(10/18)

All the good stuff was on, so lets get right into it.

30 Rock

This episode kind of lacked a bit in plot, but the lines, they were great.

Jenna had a photo spread that said she was 56, and Liz and crew go to great lengths to keep it from her.    However, it turns out she wanted to be thought of as old, so as to take advantage of the Helen Mirren effect.

In an effort to prove to Tracy that women are funny, Liz and Jenna put on a scene from their two-woman show, where Liz plays a doctor, and Jenna plays a child.  In doing this, they proved Tracy wrong, and got Jenna her coveted Geezerchair endorsement, so it was win win for everyone!

In other news, Jack is dating several different women at the same time, because he gets different things from each one.  He’s pissed when he finds one of his girls dating someone else as well, until he realizes she will feed him soup and laugh at his vaguely racist comments because he’s her father figure boyfriend.  Oh, and Ryan Lochte’s a sex idiot, for some reason.

Anyway, the funny lines!
Liz, when Tracy tells her women aren’t funny: “NERDRAGE!”
Sarina to Jack, when they run into each other, in reference to her *other* boy toy: “Ryan is my sex idiot”
Sarina, after Jack tells her about his ‘Great Escape’ dating philosophy: “My generation calls it ‘Pokemoning’…gotta catch em all!”
Tracy, when acknowledging Liz: “Elizabeth Q Lemonade!”

The Funny Stuff: NBC Thursday Night

On Thursday, due to the VP debate, there were only two new shows on, so this will be short.

Let’s jump right in!

30 Rock

This was not a very good episode.  There were a couple of laughs, but even watching it a second time didn’t make anything jump out me.

Jack is still trying to tank NBC, and Liz is still trying to have a baby.   When a Tracy Jordan look-alike becomes a gaffe-filled VP candidate, Liz has to use all his crazy antics on the show, but Jack doesn’t want her to, because politics makes sketch comedy shows better.

Liz does anyway, and Jack is proven right:  TPTB decide TGS needs to be on every night, but in order to do that, everything must arranged just so.  And so, Liz gets an organizational boner, and realizes what had been missing in her sex life: organization.  She and Criss flirt in the office supply store, and then she gets ready for the show.

Jack gets a call from a lobbyist friend, and assumes he wants the VP skits killed.  Unfortunately for Jack, the sketches are making the wholly unlikeable candidate likable, and thus, Jack has a dilemma:  Stop the sketches, which hurts NBC(good!) and hurts his chosen candidate(bad!) or continue the sketches, which would do the reverse.  In the end, he lays it on Liz, who has basically the opposite reaction.

Oh, and Kenneth’s mom came into town, and since she’s the last person on earth that buys CD’s, and Jenna just put out a chart topper that got her a royalty check for $90, she immediately tries to get Kenneth’s mom to buy more things, but they have no money, so she hates them again.

Like I said, this was a really meh episode.  There was not a lot of laughs, and the stories did not really help progress the arcs at all.

We did get some funny lines, though:

Jack, asking Liz how they could write a sketch making fun of Joe Biden: “Oh, but how could you, he’s so amazing, he rides the train!”
Jenna’s dance hit: “Balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls balls”
Jack’s lobbyist friend, after Jack says something he wants: “Let’s keep saying things we want: A closer friendship with you that includes road trips.  Your turn!”

The Funny Stuff: NBC/CBS Tour de force

Thursday is so going to be my favorite night of the week, despite the fact that I have a total of three and a half hours of TV watching to go through.

Let’s get right into it, since there are so many.

30 Rock

This show is great.  It’s full of absurdist humor that gets even better on the second viewing.  The plot is there, but secondary, so I’ll go through it, then hit up the litany of funny lines.

The show is back from hiatus, and Jack is throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the airwaves in hopes of getting Hank Hooper to leave the company to him when he retires.  They are mostly terrible show, and Liz realizes he is trying to tank the network to build get Hank to sell the network to his investor that will keep Jack in charge.

This segues into Liz’s A story, where she is trying to get out of being Jenna’s maid of honor in her crazy-pants wedding.  She realizes she should tank her responsibilities as maid of honor from Jack’s tanking of the network.

And in other stories, Kenneth and Hazel are dating, and are super creepy.  That’s about it.  On to the funny lines!

Jack, to Liz: “Glad to be back in the greatest city on earth, despite our tiny, un-American sodas”

Jack, regarding his summer activities: “Liddy won the bronze at Baby Olympics in Horsey-Jumpy”

Jack, after hearing another terrible show idea: “Jonathan, bring me my green light!”

Liz and Jenna, after Jenna dumped a box of dead doves on Lutz: “Did you kill those doves?!” *Sarc* “No, I bought them at the dead dove store”

Frank and Jack, discussing a possible new show: “Can I have a hot wife?” “If you gain 50 pounds”

Tracey to Hazel, who just said something French: “How nice to hear a lady speak the language of the Nazi’s most enthusiastic collaborators!”

Tracey, having a startling revelation: “I’m a father of three, married for 22 years, and I run my own business…oh my God, I’m the most stable adult here!”

Liz and Jack, discussing how long Jack has been attempting to tank the network: “So how long has this been going on?  Seven or eight years?” “Six weeks.”

Liz to Jenna when telling her about her bachelorette party: “It’s a surprise…and there’s nothing worse than a surprise Lemon party”

Tracy, regarding his ‘gifts’: “It’s a blessing and a purse”

The Funny stuff: ALL THE SHOWS!(CBS/NCS Thursday, 9/27)

Oh, my goodness, all the shows are on this week, save 30 Rock, so I’m just going to get right to it.

Big Bang Theory

I haven’t really watched this show regularly, but I am not too concerned, you can usually jump right back into sitcoms even if seasons, plural, were missed, and BBT is no exception.

So, Howard and Bernadette got married, and then Howard went to the International Space Station.  It looks like they used the gravity planes, because he was really floating, and it looked pretty cool.  Anyway, Howard didn’t mention to his mother that he and Bernie would be moving out.  Mom is mad, followed by Bernie being mad, followed by Howard growing some balls with his mom, and that story line is over.

Sheldon and Amy are having the first anniversary of their first date, and Penny is helping Amy get ready.  I had my first laugh of the episode when they were discussing Leonard’s spontaneous wedding proposal in bed, and Amy responded with this:  “If Sheldon proposed to me in bed, my ovaries would grab hold and never let go.”  Unfortunately, it kind of went downhill from there.  Sheldon invited a lonely Raj on their date, and Amy was not impressed.  Even worse?  Sheldon did it to ‘outsource’ his relationship agreement obligation to an Indian.  You can’t see it, but I made this face: >.< .  Amy rightfully got pissed, and nearly left, except Sheldon told her something from the heart, which he 100% cribbed from Spiderman.  Oh, Sheldon, you so oblivious.

Lastly, Penny and Leonard are all sorts of awkward, and go exactly nowhere.  I’m not even going to mention Raj’s last night visit with Stuart.

I feel like this show has gone downhill a bit.  For a season opener, it was pretty low on the laughs.  Gay subtext does not automatically equal funny.  I still enjoy the characters, so it isn’t off my watch list yet, but I really hope BBT moves forward from lowest common denominator humor.

Up All Night

This was not a complicated episode, but I was laughing through a lot of it.

Ava had a run-in with a former coworker, one that she screwed over.  He didn’t seem to mind, and invited her to coffee, where we had this bit of glorious roommate living:

Walter: “I am 41 with a  roommate…”*strums guitar*
Roommate: “SHUT THE HELL UP!”
Walter: “I’m allowed to make noise until 9PM!”

I was rolling, for real.  Anyway, he invites her to make a jingle with him, and then, while they are making it, is totally passive-aggressive with her.  In the end, he was screwing with her the same way she did with him, and it was glorious.  I’m really hoping this Ava peg-knocking continues, and sticks.  It’s pretty fun.

Reagan, on the other hand, was getting used to being a stay at home mom, and pretty much failing miserably.  Chris was attempting to backseat parent, and Reagan was having none of it.  That is, until she locked herself out of the house with Amy locked inside.  Amy ran amok…

…painting the house purple.  It was super adorable.  Reagan nearly has a major meltdown, “what if one night I leave the back door open, and we have a house full of hobos?”  but Chris brings her back from the brink, and we end in the same place the entire series started:  in the bedroom, incredibly exhausted, but feeling accomplished.

This was a great episode, with a nice subversion of the dumb dad trope, and a bit of Ava ego deflation.  I’m looking forward to the arcs all the different characters are going to go through in this season, I just hope NBC lets it go all the way.

The Office

There were a lot of misses this week in the office.  They really are trying to go off into the sunset gracefully, but I don’t know that it’s working all too well.

We start off with the cold open, where Pam tells us that the janitor is on a month long(!) vacation.  She has come up with the chore wheel, but everyone wants it to spin, and not have chores.  After several iterations, she comes up with a fun wheel, and everyone is happy!  There is even a space for a tiny wheel spin, and the tiny wheel does have chores, so Pam is all sneaky and whatnot, and no one minds that there are chores, so win-win say the rat that is eating the garbage on the floor.

Jim and Pam then talking head that they are going to Roy’s wedding.  Yes, that Roy.  Pam brings a banana because she is certain there is going to be no actual food.  They get there, and holy crap, Roy grew up.  His house is amazing, and Jim is still going on to the new business opportunity without Pam’s knowledge.  When they see Roy, they find out he made a gravel business, and is loaded.  His now wife owns a restaurant, and they are both terribly successful.  They apparently still surprise each other every day, so Jim and Pam wonder if all the surprise is out of their relationship, and Jim does his patented head tilt to the camera.  They spend the rest of the episode trying to figure out if they have any secrets, and Jim procrastinates telling her.

In other office news, creepy Clark hits on Erin, and then tries to get her to be in a porno, maybe?  He tells her that he has a hot shot news anchor friend, and she should make an audition tape with him for the news anchor.  Erin tells Andy and he storms into the customer service annex…to give Clark his credit card, and tells him to, essentially, sex Erin up.

Ok.  I’m just gonna stop there, because, while Erin may be dumb, Andy certainly isn’t, and there is no reason for character assassinations, SHOW.  Anyway, the other Pete totally cockblocks the whole thing, and he and Andy accompany Erin to a silk robe-clad Clark’s apartment. Creepy.

Lastly, with the rest of the bullpen, Nellie is trying to commence her first special project, a charity…thing, where DM will give money to charities of employee’s choice.  Dwight takes this to be a serious affront to his freedom or whatever, and chooses an organization that is really a front for the Taliban.

Nellie has a plan, though.  She has Dwight sign a contract saying he will follow Taliban law, and proceeds to steal his pen, necessitating Dwight to chop off her hand with a continently around cleaver.  Dwight hems and haws for a long, until Toby brings them a laptop with 127 hours, where they argue about that for the rest of the episode.

Like I said, this episode tried to throw a bunch of ‘funny’ things at the wall, and only a couple stuck, but even then, they were mostly middling.

I guess it’s a good thing I’m in this for the characters, and not the laughs, cause I didn’t have very many tonight.

Parks and Rec

Parks and Rec, on the other hand, has me rolling throughout the episode, as well as caring about the characters.

Lets start with Leslie, as hers was the main story.  She has decided that her first act as a city councilwoman is to impose a tax on sugary drinks, to help fight obesity in the city.  Leslie has a powwow with a service industry rep about it, and they have child-size pops!  It’s 512 ounces of amazing, and called that because it’s about the same size as a liquefied two yearold.  Also: “The zero on the label refers to the amount of water in the bottle.”  And the rep drops a bombshell:  if the tax act passes, they will have to lay off about 100 workers, and a press release will be sent out saying it’s Leslie’s fault.  Next, at a public forum, half the people are for it, and half are against, so Leslie is completely torn.  Leslie gets ready for the council meeting by staying up all night and drinking a full gallon of pop, which leads to the expected conclusion: she yaks in the trashcan, and asks for a recess.  In that recess, she talks to her mentor, Ron, and he tells her that he tried to have her fired four times, but her dogged determination and conviction convinced him to withdraw the termination.  Leslie gains her confidence back and votes for the tax bill, and it passes.  Service industry rep is pissed.

Ben, on the other hand, is having issues in Washington DC: font is not uniform, and ’12 point, 13 is just obnoxious.’  April ironically helps, but Ben doesn’t really get it.  Then, there is a funny caricature of Ben, and he decides to fire the interns, except whoops!  They are all seriously connected, so Ben’s going to smooze like a mofo, and how. Ben is a complete dork and tries to get them to like him, by buying pizza and giving them the day off to play Frisbee.  “Someone please tell me we Kodak’d that moment.”  When they get back to the office, he finds another picture, and finds out that the artist is April.  He gets pissed, she stays apathetic, and fun times are had by all.  Oh, and Ben begs for 15% effort out of her, and she gives it.  Ellis gets the result, and she basically tells him to work or she will straight up murder him.  It was funnier when she said it.

Andy has to get in shape to get into the police academy, and Chris and Tom are going to help him.  Andy is terribly out of shape, and it is amazeballs.

He and Chris work out a bout over what appears to be the course of a couple of day, but what is more likely at least a couple of weeks, seeing as Tom had time to completely pimp out his pace cart.  Chris helps Andy find his motivation, but realizes that he(Chris) has only physical motivation, and thus, heads into a downward spiral, culminated in a complete breakdown .  Tom finally tells him he should see a therapist, and Chris takes it as a revelation.  So, therapy, yay!

So, not only does this show bring the funny every time, and the characters are great to boot.  Quipy retorts but believability is a great combination, and makes me want to come back for more every week.

The funny stuff: And we’re back!

So I have decided to lump all the shows on a single night together, so as to keep these posts from getting too long.  Today, we had three of NBC’s Thursday night comedies return, with 30 Rock returning after the SNL primetime shows end.

Anyway, I’ll just get right to it.

Up All Night: Friendships and Partnerships(S2E1)  I heard that this show had gone through a bit of retooling over the summer, so I’m giving it another shot for recaps.  This episode was cute.  Reagan lost her job, since Ava’s show got cancelled.  Chris decides to step up to the plate and got his job back at his law firm, since they had just started on a bathroom remodel and need to be able to pay the contractors.  Except for, of course, he hates it.  You can’t have a law firm executive on TV without them being evil, amirite?  So he decides to go into business with Reagan’s brother, the aforementioned contractor on the bathroom, in a construction business.

In Reagan and Ava news, they get in a fight because Reagan is still trying to run Ava’s life, except it turns out they’re both just scared.  But it did create a comedy gold moment:

All in all, not a bad start to the season, getting everyone situated in their season arcs and whatnot.

The Office:  This is the final season for our friends at Dunder Mifflin, and the writers are keenly aware of that fact.  It seems they are going to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, starting with tonight.  Andy has turned asshole, but only toward Nellie, who is still there, for some reason.  She is a much less obnoxious character when humbled, so hopefully that will stay…but the Andy being a jerk thing can go away.  Pam and Jim are going to be in for some strife next episode, when everything hits the fan on Jim accepting a business opportunity located in Philadelphia.  You could see it coming a mile away, and we even got a fun little fake ‘behind the documentary’ scene after their first joint talking head, where we hear some of the documentary crew answering a question as well.  Dwight has gone back to solo crazy schemes, and with New Dwight possibly encroaching on his sales, Dwight goes through a series of misadventures that ends with him hanging from a bike attached to a tightrope.  It was weird.  Kelly and Ryan’s absence was explained, and we learn Oscar is sleeping with Angela’s husband.

Cause if there’s anything we know about Oscar, it’s that he’s a husband-stealing manwhore.

*snerk*

It was a decent start to the season, but I think I would have appreciated a bit more callback to the show’s roots.

Parks and Rec: Squeee!  I love this show.  The chemistry of the main couples are fantastic, the jokes actually hit, and are smart, and character development is a thing on this show, unlike most sitcoms.  So, Leslie and Andy go to Washington to visit Ben and April, since they are both working on the congressional campaign Ben got hired onto last season.  Leslie has a proposal to get money for a river clean-up, and is in a super good mood…until she gets cock-blocked by the obnoxious secretary.  Then, she has a fancy party with Ben, and is completely demoralized by the tall, intelligent, tall, beautiful and tall women at the party.  She has a short breakdown, but then Andy reminds her that she’s a strong woman, and this makes her realize that can totally clean the river up herself!  Which she does! To which I say, ewwwww!

Meanwhile, back in Pawnee, Ron has decided to run the Employee Appreciation Barbeque ‘properly,’ that is, with no foof, only meat.  Naturally, everyone is…not nearly as excited as Ron, and he storms off in a huff.  Chris has to remind him that it was an EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION barbeque, not an employee appreciation BARBEQUE, so Ron makes it up to everyone by bringing in corn, and telling them he appreciates them.  OH!  Ann and Tom broke up, Twinkle Twinkle big star!

The funny stuff: NBC Thursdays make me lol

Yay, Community!

That is all.

Actually, no, just kidding.  But still:  YAY!

Community was back for its third show after a forced hiatus following a December episode(NBC Britta’d it, as all the cool kids say).  Troy and Abed have continued their sad arc, in which their friendship is on the ropes.  This time, a pillow fort vs. a blanket fort, with the Vice Dean of Air Conditioner Repair acting as the instigator, was all it took for angry glares to abound, with an ever growing sadness in the viewer’s heart.

This is what my husband sang to me at the "To be continued..."

In less…depressing news, Britta Britta’d it again, with Subway(the guy, not the restaurant) when she did “unnatural acts” while being secretly recorded by a dastardly Pierce…but what else is new?  My favorite convo?  “You should read 1984.” “Oh, I did, in high school.  I think everyone should be forced to read it.”  So made me LoL!

30 Rock.  What can I say about this show?  It’s getting a bit long in the tooth, which even they seem to recognize, seeing as the entire episode was, “hey, haven’t we done this before?  Yeah, we have?  Thought so.”  Though the new page is making me laugh a bit—“Hey boys, down here, I have boobs, you know!”

The Office was a rerun, so I shall flip to ABC Wednesdays, and talk about Happy Endings a bit.  This show is funny!  Normal situations, ratcheted up to a thousand on the crazy scale makes for tons of fun.  I mean, who hasn’t lied to an acquaintance they didn’t really want to hang out with, only to have to back up that lie by paying 30 strangers twenty bucks each to play another friends coworkers at said friends baby shower for her non-existent baby?  Happens to everyone, for sure!

Finally we have Up All Night.  This show is kind of, eh…I think it may be dropping off my radar again now that I’m kind of over Awake, and since I was only watching it to get to Awake, the need is gone.  I feel like I should like this show more, but it really is seeming to go for the inoffensive laughs, rather than the really funny ones.  Not that I could actually come up with the really funny stuff, that’s why other people get paid to write, and I don’t, but, maybe they should?  Over there?  Anyway.  The one chicka did some things, and the husband hurt himself trying to play hockey with the young guns, and the chicka sand with Stevie Nicks in her head.  Yeah, this show is done, I can’t even remember why the different pieces were funny…not a good sign.

Next week:  More recaps, assuming the episodes are new!  If not, we look at: Chaos
