Another metaphor: Groceries

Imagine you have a monthly plan you pay into, one that lets you go into the grocery store, chose your food, and only pay $10 at checkout.

Would you plan a food budget, make sure you are getting the best deals, only get what you need, not just what you want?

Or would you not plan at all, throwing meals together wily-nilly, going to the grocery store several times a week because you just had to have that one specific item?  Would you choose the fancier items, regardless of the fact that they are exactly the same as the more generic brands?  Would you fill your cart with junk food, and things that taste good, instead of food that is FOOD, and good for you to boot?

Now, you have no idea what anything even costs, because what is the point of the grocery store putting prices up if they don’t matter for anyone anyway? Why would the grocery store bother stocking the lower cost items, if everyone is going to get the name brand items anyway?

And who would stop the grocery store owner from colluding with their supplier, having the supplier jack up the cost of goods so the grocery store owner can charge the plan more money?  And when that happens, guess what happens to your monthly pay in?  It goes up, because your plan’s costs have risen, and you had NO CLUE, because you have no idea what groceries cost.

And there would be much wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and there would be calls to the government: “Why aren’t you stopping our grocery plan pay-ins from increasing?  Everyone needs food, and I can’t afford this anymore!”

And the government would step in, and force the plans to lower their premiums, but uh-oh.  The plans aren’t sustainable long term with the decreased revenue, so they would slowly start to go out of business.  And the government would have to step in, because people have to eat, you know.  And they would run the grocery plans on the tax payer’s dime, the plans that weren’t sustainable as evidenced by the multitudes of shuttered plans.

And then where would we end up, all because you wanted cheaper groceries.

Wow, that one kinda got away from me, was only supposed to be about insurance, and somehow morphed into unsustainable debt.  Though I suppose the topics are forever intertwined now anyway, so it works.

Today in music history: 2000

Today we go back...all the way to the year 2000!

And what song was #1 twelve years ago today?

"Maria Maria" by Santana ft several other people that I have no clue

I really like this song.  It's so laid back, especially considering there are some rappers in it, I think, that you can really just enjoy it for what it is.

I didn't realize when it first came out, but this song has several lines in Spanish, which is interesting.  I guess I just thought I couldn't understand what they were saying, which was pretty much situation normal for a lot of songs out at that time.

So what do you remember about this song?

Linkage!

Today I have for you another site I visit just about every day:

Cracked.com!

Cracked specializes in lists.  They post two to three lists EVERY day, with their staff of about 10-15 people.

Some of my favorites include:

18 images you won't believe aren't photoshopped

7 Artists Who Secretly Made your Favorite movies

The 8 Creepiest Glitches Hidden in Popular Video Games

One of their columnist, John Cleese is quickly becoming one of my favorites, with lists like 5 Things Nobody Tells You About Having a Career, or The 5 Stupidest Habit You Develop Growing Up Poor.

This website is terribly addictive, I've gotten sucked into what I call the 'Cracked Loop,' where I click on related articles linked at the end of the one I was reading, and stay on the site for hours upon hours at a time.

Luckily for me now, I've read most of the articles on the site, but there are a few that I read whenever I come across them, cause they amuse me that much.

So, if you are looking for a fun little diversion for an hour or two, or more if you want, check out Cracked!

Warcraft: How I stopped worrying and learned to love the hybrid

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve talked about factions, and the races that go along with them.

Today, we have classes.

Classes are a way to differentiate different players not by how they look, but what they can do.

Classes are broken into several different types, or roles: Tanks, healers, Melee DPS(damage per second), and Ranged DPS.

WoW has ten, soon to be eleven, classes that can fulfill one or more of these roles.

The first class I’m going to talk about is the Rogue.  Rogues can only fulfill the melee DPS role.  In terms of lore, they are sneaky little sneak thieves, usually specializing in stealth combat.  Rogues, for gameplay purposes, use ‘energy’ to cast their moves, creating combinations that can be unleashed as a big finisher.  When playing a rogue, you need to be nimble, changing direction and location, while still being able to cast moves.  Rogues can wear cloth and leather, so they are a bit squishy(ie, they take damage more easily from a monster), but they make up for that in evasiveness.

Next we have the Hunter.  Hunters can only fill the ranged DPS roll.  Hunters are the class that shoots guns or bows, and has a wild animal as a pet that they can also send into combat.  The nice thing about hunters is they are a relatively easy class to learn, but harder to master.  When playing a hunter, you need to be aware of all your tools, including traps, stuns, and your pet.  Hunters can wear cloth, leather, and mail, so even in they are being hit by monsters, they won’t necessarily die too fast.

For a second purely ranged DPS class, we have the Mage.  Mages specialize in direct damage spells focusing on frost, fire and arcane type damage.  Depending on which kind of damage you decide to specialize in, you may have incredible burst damage, a decent multi-mob attack repertoire, or you may have increased survivability.  Mages can only wear cloth, and are thus known as the ‘glass cannon.’  Mages have an intense variety of spells, but most are relegated to the back burner, depending on specialization.

A third purely ranged DPS class is the Warlock.  Warlocks are similar to mages, but they have a bit more
survivability, despite their only being able to wear cloth armor.  Warlocks specialize in shadow and fire damage, and also can summon demonic pets to assist in combat.  Warlocks also specialize more in damage over time, or DoT spells, more so than just about any class in the game.  Similar to mages, warlocks have a multitude of spells they can use, but warlocks seem to use most of their options in the course of combat.

Death knights, or DK’s, are a relatively new class to WoW.  They can fulfill two roles, tank and melee DPS.  In both cases, the focus is first on getting some rudimentary DoT diseases on the monster, then whacking said monster with your weapon.  DK’s have a lot of different things they can do, including yanking a monster toward them, or laying down a ground effect called death and decay that hits a monster over a set period of time.  DK’s can wear all armor types, and so tend to be difficult to kill.

Another two role class is the Warrior.  Warriors can also fulfill the tank and melee DPS role.  In fact, they are superficially terribly similar to DK’s.  Plate armor, whacking monsters, tanking and melee DPSing.  However, warriors definitely have a completely different feel than DK’s.  While warriors have quite a few special attacks, a big chunk of their damage comes just from hitting a monster straight up.  Warriors do not have a lot of visual effects on their moves, just a lot of hitting things, which can be fun in it’s own way.

Next comes a class that can fulfill multiple roles, the  Paladin.  Paladins can specialize to be either tank, healer or melee DPS.  This is the first true hybrid, though paladins are probably my least favorite class to play in the game.  I think the biggest issue is, unless you were to heal, you must be right on any monters, and I really REALLY dislike melee.  Paladins can wear all armor types, and are one of the MOST difficult classed in the game to kill.

And now, we’re getting to the good stuff: Druid. Druids can play all four roles effectively, assuming they have the correct gear and specialization.  When I played druid, I usually played ranged DPS, seeing as I am not good at healing, I hate melee DPS, and I find tanking rather boring.  Druids can wear cloth and leather armor, though the armor led to…The biggest issue with being able to play all four roles is that all those roles required a different gearset.  I never had any bagspace available at all when I played my druid.  So, I thought I’d try something new…

Shaman.  Shaman can fulfill three roles, ranged and melee DPS, and healing.  Shaman are, in game lore, the speakers to and for the elements.  To do this, they use totems as conduits, and call on fire, air, earth and water to deal damage and heal wounds.  Their gear looks the coolest, and they have a wide variety to choose from, from cloth to leather to mail.  Shaman don’t have the gear space issues druid do, since two of their three specializations can use the same gear.

And that is all the class choices in World of Warcraft.  Next time, I’ll go into a bit more depth as to what the terms tank, heals, and DPS actually mean.

Today in music History: 1992

Today, as we drift again through the early nineties, we look back to a quaint year, 1992.  And when we get there we find:

"Jump Jump" by Kris Kross

Ok, I had NEVER seen the video for this, and it is pretty much the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.  I get that backwards clothes was their gimmick, or whatever, but seriously?  That must have been terribly uncomfortable.  I know tag by themselves can drive me absolutely bonkers, can you imagine having EVERYTHING in the wrong place?  Ick ick ick.

And that's not even going into the song itself.  The boys were...not terribly good rappers.  For all their talk of flow, either they didn't have much of it, or the song didn't lend itself to it that well.  Every line seemed to be a struggle, which was odd, considering how simplistic the lyrics are.

Anyway, what do you think of this one?

Melissa meets boy: Mr. Squirrels in da house!

This week, I was going to talk about all the secondary characters, but one really stood out:

Eric Matthews.

In the first two seasons, he was 100% normal.  As Cory’s older brother, he did all the things a typical older brother does-tease Cory relentlessly, go on dates, and occasionally go on dates.  And no, that is not me losing my mind, Eric had a new crush just about every single episode, from random girl, to random other girl, to Kari Russel, Eric dated them all.  He, along with his best friend Jason Marsden, had many b-plots during this time, though James Marsden mysteriously vanished after the second season.

However, in the third season, Eric started to change as a character.  I think it was around the time of the Disney trip, when Eric made a life-size doll of Cory to fake out Cory’s teachers, that Eric really jumped headlong onto the crazy-train.

Eric, during that period, went from average older brother to kinda dumb older brother.  He nearly didn’t graduate high school, and then didn’t get into college, forcing him to lounge around the house all day, leading to another of my favorite moments.

Once Eric got to college, he got dumber, and dumber, and dumber.  However, he got funnier and funnier and funnier at the same time, so it worked out really well!  Eric is probably my favorite character from Boy Meets World, while he was REALLY dumb, you knew he cared for his family, and was generally a kind-hearted soul.

Eric had many many many misadventures, really to numerous to count.  So, I leave you with, the best of Eric Matthews

Next week, the rest of the secondary characters, I promise!

Today in music History: 1991

And for today, we go back to 1991, again.

But!  It is a new song, drumroll please...

"Baby, Baby" by Amy Grant

I actually did remember the words to most of this song, it's a cute little new relationship type of song.

The video is kind of hilarious, terribly early-nineties with bad clothes and hair all around.

What did you think of this one?

Braenna from the beginning: A dwarf's tale, Part 2

 ONE YEAR LATER

“Eeee!” the baby, wrapped to her mother’s back, squealed as Baerla quickly turned to the opening door.

“Callum,” Baerla exclaimed, “what happened to your arm?”

Callum grimaced, as his mother answered for him.  “This cack-handed gumby fell out of a tree, and I think he broke it.”

Baerla rushed to Callum, and quickly checked over his arm.  Her poking and prodding elicited a strong

“OWWW” from Callum, and Baerla determined, “Yes, definitely broken.  Give me a minute to prepare, and I’ll fix you up.”

The healer began focusing on Callum’s arm, channeling her limited ability to the boy’s injury.  As she focused, Callum squealed in discomfort as the bone mended itself.  Baerla finished the mending, and sat back with a long sigh.  She and the boy’s mother looked over her handiwork.  “It’s not perfect, but it’ll do,” Baerla noted.

Callum began flexing his arm, twisting and turning it to test the mending.  His mother felt the formerly broken area, asking “this feels…not quite right.  Are you sure you’re done?”

“Yes, “Baerla answered, a bit testily, “I am.  I’m not one of those fancy Ironforge healers that can spend the whole of their life training, and perfecting my craft.  I’ve got three grown daughters, and this new little one, taking up the vast majority of my time. My work may not bring your son’s arm back to full strength, but it will have full function, and he will not lose it.  What more would you like?”

“Nothing,” Callum’s mother said bashfully, “thank you so much!  I really appreciate it.  Let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you.

Baerla brightened considerably, and said, “Oh, don’t worry about it, it was my pleasure.  I’ll see you soon!  And stay out of those trees, Callum, I don’t want to have to fix you again!”

“Thanks, Mrs. Ironbeard!” Callum shouted as he ran out of the house, “I promise I won’t!”

“And as for you, little one,” Baerla looked at her daughter, still strapped to her back, “lets get you some food, I bet you’re getting hungry.  Who’s momma’s precious little angel?” Braenna giggled as her mother cooed, and listened in rapt attention.  Soon the child was fed and content yet again.

Excel and you: Mail merge, by special request!

By special request, today, we are going to look at mail merges.

To start a mail merge, the very first step would be to organize your information.

For example, if you are going to create address labels, you should put all your information in a spreadsheet as follows:

Now, I would assume your spreadsheet would be a bit bigger, but I don’t feel like writing in a bunch of non-existent addresses.

So, you have your addresses all nicely laid out in a spreadsheet, and there is a header row naming all the columns, and you have saved it in a place where you know where it is.

Next step would be to figure out what kind of labels you have(if you are not doing labels, feel free to move on).  They will usually say what brand and style they are on the bottom of the sheet.

Now, we make our way to a new word document.  I use MS Office 2007, and thus have the ribbon.  If you are using a previous version of Office, this probably won’t help you very much, sorry.

Click on the mailing tab, and click start mail merge. Since we are doing address labels in this example, click on that button.  I usually use Avery or Avery equivalent, so I click on Avery US Letter, and click on the appropriate model number.

Now we must select recipients.  We will be using an existing list, that we made and saved, and remember it’s saved location above, so click on that and navigate to your list.  Double click on your saved spreadsheet to use it in your mail merge.

If your saved sheet has multiple tabs, make sure to choose the tab that your information is on.

Now, we add fields!  Click on ‘Insert Merge Fields’ to select the appropriate fields.  You can format using the default data that appears.  REMEMBER: if you don’t put a space, or a comma, the computer can’t read your mind and do it for you, so put them in yourself, unless you want to mail things to JohnDoe.

So this is what your sheet should look like now:

The purple arrows indicate where a space should be, and the red arrow is our next step!

So, now we will click on ‘Update Labels,” and POOF! We have a default document ready for merging!

Now all that is left is clicking finish and merge(I like to use the edit individual documents in case something got borked), and then print!

I hope this has been helpful!

Do you have additional mail merge tips or uses?  Let me know in the comments!

Today in music history: 1999

And the moment you've all been waiting for, our song of the day!

Today we have...

"No Scrubs" by TLC

Oh, TLC.  Everyone loved Waterfalls, and suddenly you guys were huge.  And then, everything kinda went to crap.

If I am remembering correctly, there were arsons, and arresst, and mental breakdowns...they had a crazy ride.

"No Scrubs" was one of their final hits, on their album Fanmail.  I can still sing along to the chorus, so it was rather catchy, but not nearly the hit "Waterfalls" was.

Also: Can we talk about the strange outfits in the video?  Really?  I mean, I know it was the 90's but I'm pretty sure those don't even look remotely like something anyone would wear, in or out of their right mind.

What do you remember about TLC and/or this song?
