Warcraft Glossary of Terms!

Now in alphabetical order!

Agility: A stat that increases attack power in some classes, the ability to critically hit, and dodge rating.

AH: The auction house, a player stocked market place where you can buy or sell items gained in the world, if they are BoE. 

Armor(pieces): The different items your character wears, acquired through several different methods, including the AH, by looting mobs, trading, and as quest rewards.

Armor(value):A number that, as it increases, decreases incoming damage by a percentage based on amount of it.

Avatar: The in-game character you create and control.  You get to pick name, gender, race, class, and superficial looks based on several options.

Azeroth:  The world where the majority of World of Warcraft takes place.  It can also refer to one of the seven of the human kingdoms, or one of the continents that make up the Eastern Kingdoms land mass.  But usually, it means the world as a whole. 

Bank: A vault where you can store items.  The first set of slots are free, and you can purchase additional bag spaces for an increasing amount.

Block: To partial stop an attack

Blue(in game): Rare quality weapon or armor that your character can equip.  Is better than green, but worse than purple, assuming the stats are the same type.


BoE: Bind on Equip-These items can be sold or traded to another player if they haven’t been equipped.  Once your character equips the item, you can no longer trade or sell it to another player.  The item then is labeled soulbound.

BoP: Bind on Pickup-These items are soulbound immediately upon looting.  There is usually a popup warning if you are about to loot one.

Dodge: To completely avoid an incoming attack.

DoT: Damage over time-a spell DPS can cast that causes damage to a monster over a period of time.

DPS: Damage per second, or how many hit points damage you are causing the monster you are attacking. 

Elite: A mob that is harder than normal to kill

Gear: Weapons or armor that your character can equip

GM: Guild Master.  They are usually a founding member of a guild, and are in charge of setting permissions and choosing officers.

Green(in game): Uncommon quality weapon or armor that your character can equip.  Is better than white, but worse than blue, assuming the stats are the same type. 

Guild: A form of organization.  They are player-created, and have a hierarchical structure, with the GM in charge, and up to nine ranks below.

HoT: Heal over time-a spell healers can cast that causes you to regain lost hitpoints over a period of time.

Intellect: A stat that causes your mana to be raised by a factor of 15.

Level(ing): The process of increasing your character’s power, achieved through quests or killing mobs and gaining XP.

Mob: Any monster in game, usually the one you are attacking at the moment.

NPC: Non-player character, or one that is controlled via AI-the computer.

Parry: To stop an attack using your weapon.

Pull: The act of grabbing a mob’s attention to kill it

Purple: Epic quality weapon or armor that your character can equip.  Is better than green, but worse than orange.  Also called ‘Epics’  Usually the highest level gear a player can equip.

Quests: Tasks an NPC will give your character to do.

Regen: The rate your health and mana pools restore to maximum levels naturally

Respawn: When a killed mob is replaced by an identical alive mob.Soulbound: An item that cannot be sold or traded to a player character

 Spirit: A stat that increases mana regeneration in some classes, and chance to hit in others.

Stamina: A stat on weapons and armor that causes your hitpoints to be raised by a factor of 10.

Stat: An attribute of your character that can be raised by leveling or gear.

Strength: A stat that increases attack power in some classes, and increases parry chance.

Tank: While in a group, to hold a mob’s attention, causing it to attack you.  Tanks have high armor, block, and dodge to mitigate incoming damage.

Tick: The amount of damage caused or healed when using a HoT or DoT.

XP: Experience points, the currency that allows a character to level.  Amount of XP required to level gradually goes up as levels are gained.
