Happy Friday!

It’s Friday again, and so we look at another book!

This week I’m sticking to the YA pot, and reviewing:

Spoiled by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan.

Molly Dix is a typical Midwestern girl: best friend who is always there for her, swimmer boyfriend who she has known since forever, and a mother that has just died of cancer, so bummer for her.

Brooke Berlin is exactly what you would imagine a west coast kid to the stars to be like.  Spoiled(Oh, hi title!), self-absorbed, and totally obsessed with fashion and being famous, what could she and Molly possibly have in common?

Their father, movie star Brick Berlin, of course!  And when Molly moves to the Hollywood Hills after her aforementioned mother’s death, the story really gets rolling.  As it turns out, Molly had no idea Brick Berlin was her father until her mother was on her deathbed.  Molly’s whole life was flipped upside down to move to California, and Brooke doesn’t like it one bit.

From non-helpful ‘advice’ to ignoring her completely, Brooke makes Molly’s life miserable in hopes of getting her to move back to Indiana.  Molly, for her part, makes friends with Brooke’s sworn enemy just to get back at her.  Will they ever get along?  Read the book to find out!

I really enjoyed this book.  From the references to the slang, from The Brick Berlin Theater for Serious Emotional Artistry to Avalanche! the movie, this novel is funny.  The story is fast paced, but never seems rushed.  I really like the side character as well, they are not just one-dimensional one-offs, for the most part, and you really want to get to know them.

It’s not a perfect book, sometimes motivations seem based more on what the plot needs than what an actual person would do, but sometimes you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

All in all, though, I really enjoyed this book, and can’t wait for part two to come out in the next couple of weeks, here!
